The Big Red Button Moments

The Bleepin' MIDI Button-Masher's Guide (aka MIDI Triggers)

Okay, so you've got yourself a MIDI device & you wanna make OnSong do stuff when you poke it. Cool. This screen is basically OnSong's way of saying "yeah, I'm listenin' to your gadget now." You send it commands, we map 'em to actions, & boom — your setlist does whatever you told it to do. These magical mappings? We call 'em MIDI triggers. Srsly.

Okay, So... Listenin' for Stuff

Open this screen & OnSong goes into eavesdrop mode on your MIDI gear. Send a command, it shows up in the list. Send the same command again & it highlights that row like you just found it on a treasure map. Send it a third time & we'll ask you "so... what do you actually want this button to do?" Then you pick an action, & that action lives on the right side of the MIDI command like a faithful sidekick.

Wanna switch which channels we're spyin' on? Or turn off the whole listenin' thing? Tap that "Listenin' for MIDI input..." text at the bottom & boom — Channel Picker time.

Mappin' Actions (The Point of All This)

Actions get glued to MIDI commands when you tap on the row. Then we let you pick an action & attach it like a sticker. Done.

Throwin' In More Triggers

Feelin' lazy? Tap the + button down in the corner & we'll open the MIDI Editor so you can tell us exactly which MIDI command you wanna add without actually playin' it. Fancy, right?

Tweakin' the Stuff You Already Made

Hit Edit in the top right corner & all your triggers go into edit mode. Tap a row & boom — Trigger Editor opens up so you can futz with the MIDI event, the action, & all the other nerdy settings.

Shufflin' Your Triggers Around

Wanna rearrange? Hit Edit in the top right, or just drag & drop like you're organizing your digital life. The order you pick gets saved & remembered, but honestly? It doesn't matter how they're ordered — they all fire off just fine no matter what.

Oops, Delete That Thing

Accidentally triggered something? Swipe right-to-left on it & tap Delete. Or just use edit mode. Either way, KTHXBYE to that trigger.

The Secret Menu That Appears Out of Nowhere

Tap & hold on a MIDI trigger (iOS/iPadOS) or right-click it (macOS) & this magical menu pops up with bonus stuff:

  • Pick an Action — because apparently you wanna change your mind & pick a different action now.
  • Edit — opens the Trigger Editor so you can go full nerd mode & tweak the MIDI event, action, & all the settings.
  • Disable — makes the trigger sleepy. It won't fire & it'll look all grayed out & sad.
  • Reenable — wake it back up because you realized you actually do need it.
  • Remove — yeet it outta the list.

Messin' with the Settings

Wanna customize how OnSong talks to MIDI? Hit the MIDI Settings Menu. You can do wild stuff like listenin' for chords or makin' your MIDI instrument play 'em back like it's a real musician.

PSA: Any MIDI command you add but forget to assign an action to? It's outta here the second you close this screen. Whoops.
